Nose:

Oak, cherry cola, plum, honeysuckle, candied raspberry, apricot, and vanilla. 

Palate: 

Peanut, nutmeg, shortbread, cherry, and raspberry muffins. 

Finish:

Long finish with notes of cherry limeade, black licorice, clove, and allspice. 

Final Thoughts:

Southern Spirits’ single barrel pick of Rebel Distiller’s Collection comes in at 113 proof, and aged for 6 years according to the barrel fill date. For those unfamiliar with Lux Row Distillers, Rebel is the wheated bourbon mash bill line, while Ezra Brooks is the rye bourbon mash bill. For this barrel, the nose opens with a rich sweetness reminiscent of cherry cola and candied raspberries that is supported by a good amount of oak and vanilla that you would expect to find in a wheated bourbon. The palate comes through with similar fruit flavors along with more “doughy” notes that remind me of shortbread cookies. A long, lingering finish rounds out the whiskey, which brings a nice dose of baking spices and even a touch of black licorice. Overall, I really enjoyed this single barrel! I’m not always the biggest fan of Lux Row as I tend to get a lot of nutty flavors, but this one has a great balance between the nutty notes and the rich cola and sweet fruit notes. At $45 for an age stated cask strength wheated bourbon… sign me up!
