Final Thoughts:
Found North Cask Strength Rye Whisky Batch 001 is a 114.2 proof Canadian rye made of 66% rye, 30% corn, and 4% barley, which is a blend of 16 year Hungarian oak rye, 17 year ex-Speyside Scotch casks rye, and 20 year double-distilled corn whiskey aged in refill virgin oak. The first thing you notice when nosing this whisky is the punch of candied green apple. It is the predominant aroma coming out of the glass, which is not uncommon for a lot of rye whiskies. With a bit of air time, additional notes of coffee cake and vanilla bean begin to surface. The palate continues with that intense apple note, butter, and brown sugar, which all reminds me of a rich apple pie. Finally, the whisky finishes with a nice amount of leather and oak that you would expect on something aged this long. Overall, this is a really enjoyable rye if you are the kind of person that enjoys green apple notes in your whiskey (which I am). The flavors are well developed and packed with a strong oak backbone that helps to curb the sweet notes on this pour.
