Final Thoughts:
Grain & Barrel Spirits recently partnered with Elvis Presley Enterprises to launch two different Elvis inspired whiskies. The first is a 90 proof rye aged for 3 years, called “The King”, while the second is a 90 proof TN whiskey aged for 2.5 years, called “Tiger Man”. The rye whiskey brings forth a lot of herbaceous and floral notes on the nose/palate including chamomile, mint, hibiscus, spearmint, and lavender. These work well with the spice cake and brown sugar notes also present on the nose. The finish brings more mint tea and a distinct dark chocolate Reese’s cup note. Switching to the TN whiskey, the notes here are certainly more grain forward. There is a strong corn and and green-oak note through the whiskey, accompanied by pink cotton candy, cacao nibs, and surprisingly gummy bears. Overall the youth on these whiskies is definitely present, however, the rye has more complexity to it, which makes for a more interesting pour. This isn’t surprising given that most rye whiskies mature faster than their bourbon/whiskey counterparts. If you are an Elvis fan and enjoy an eye catching label on your bar, see if you enjoy one of these new offerings.
