Final Thoughts:
The latest release from Broad Branch Distillery is their bottled-in-bond, single barrel, Boykin Rye made of 100% prairie rye grain. On the nose, you immediately know that you are drinking a rye, with caramel apple, clove, orange zest, and a bit of cigar tobacco. The palate pops with similar mulled cider and mint flavors, along with acorn squash roasted in brown sugar (stay with me on this one, because it actually works really well!). The whiskey finishes the same way it started with a heavy dose of baking spices and mint that lingers on your tongue. Overall, this is a solid, well constructed rye whiskey. When I first opened the bottle, there were some stronger grass and earth notes, however, with a bit of air time, those receded into the background. This allowed the bold spices and green apple notes to come to the forefront, which is what I look for in a rye whiskey.
