Final Thoughts:

The latest store pick from Lazy Day Liquors in Tega Cay, SC is a single barrel rye from Barrell Craft Spirits. A 14 year Canadian rye whiskey coming in at 140.58 proof. In case you think you misread those stats… that is a 14 year hazmat rye whiskey uncut and unfiltered! Needless to say, we are off to a great start before even opening the bottle. As anticipated from a Canadian rye, there is a huge spice punch from the nose to the finish with spiced cider, cayenne, and cinnamon. There is also a distinct flavor of caramel apple lollipops, griller pineapple, and deliciously sweet lemon curd. Overall, you would never know that this whiskey is hazmat (above 140 proof). Of course you can instantly recognize that it is cask strength, but you would never know the proof point is that high. With an extremely limited number of whiskies that can actually be classified as hazmat, this is an excellent pick from Lazy Day Liquors that shows that there are some high proof whiskey can bring forth complexity and depth of flavor that is not completely overwhelmed by the burn from the alcohol content.
