Nose:

Mint, Mandarin oranges, clove, licorice, honeycrisp apples, grapefruit and honeycomb. 

Palate: 

Clove, allspice, orange creamsicle, baked apples, and lemon.  

Finish:

A medium finish with notes of sweet tea, lavender, cardamom, and orange peel.

Final Thoughts:

Penny’s Proof Rye is Sagamore Spirit’s first whiskey made from their own distillate. As a distillery exclusive release at only $0.01 (that is not a typo), this offering will not be widely available until Sagamore feels that the rye has reached the right level of maturation. This rye brings a lot to the table with Mandarin oranges and mint on the nose, followed by orange creamsicle and baked apples on the palate. Penny’s Proof is a wonderful rye whiskey at only 3.5 years, that will round out with a bit more oak and char notes as the spirit continues to age a bit longer. It is never an easy transition for a distillery to go from sourced product to their own distillate, but in my opinion, Sagamore nailed it and is going to have an arguably better rye in the near future!
