Final Thoughts:

This single barrel of Old Pepper Rye was picked by Greens Farms Spirits out of Westport, CT. The whiskey itself was sourced from MGP, coming in at 4 years old and 110 proof. The interesting part about this barrel is the balance between spicy rye and creamy sweet notes on the nose and palate. Upfront, there is a nice aroma of sweet honey and melon, with only a a touch of baking spices present. A bit of ethanol is present as well, but does not take away from the enjoyment of the whiskey. However, the palate truly pops with classic spicy rye notes of ginger and cardamom, all complimented by an undertone of molasses cookies. Overall I really enjoyed this single barrel pick, and found the contrast between the nose and palate to be the most interesting part. At only 4 years old, I think a bit more time in the barrel could have leveled out those extremes, but at the same time, it makes for a lively and fun glass of whiskey!
