Nose:

Sweet apple, vanilla, light brown sugar, mint, and lemon peel. 

Palate: 

Herbaceous, pepper spice, mint, cucumber, sweet apple, honeycomb, vanilla. 

Finish:

Medium finish with cucumber, cocoa, nutmeg, and subtle dill. 

Final Thoughts:

Southern Star Double Rye is the first whiskey distilled and produced by Southern Distilling Company in Statesville, NC. The nose is quite sweet with strong aromas of apple, mint, and vanilla. These flavors continue onto the palate, along with the introduction of a peppery spice and lots of herbaceous notes. The whiskey rounds out with a medium finish reminiscent of a sweet cucumber mint water (not to imply that it is watery). Overall, this a great start for Southern Distilling Company with a rye that is both flavorful and fairly priced. At $30, this is worth a try if you are new to rye whiskey, or enjoy a sweeter profile. For those looking for a bold and spicy rye, this is probably not for you.
