Nose:

Stewed green apple, burnt caramel, tobacco, cinnamon, brown sugar, mixed berry tart, light clove, and light mint.

Palate: 

White peach, heavy cinnamon, ginger, nectarine, honeysuckle, butterscotch, slightly grassy, and lychee fruit.

Finish:

Medium finish with nectarine, sweet mint, honey, and ginger.

Final Thoughts:

One of Mythology Distillery’s inaugural offerings is the Hell Bear American Whiskey (great name and even cooler label!). This whiskey is 90 proof and carries a 2-year age statement, however, it is a blend of 2 to 3 year straight rye (presumably MGP) and 4 to 5 year straight bourbon. On the nose, the rye comes through first with green apple, cinnamon, and mint, followed by the darker caramel aromas driven by the bourbon. The palate reveals a lot of white fruit notes like peaches, nectarine, and lychee, along with the beginning of some more spice forward notes. The spice from the palate builds on the finish with a heavy dose of ginger and cinnamon. As a combination of both rye and bourbon, this whiskey feels very balanced from start to finish. There are nice sweet fruit notes, spicy ginger notes, and also sweet mint that show themselves after a few days of air time. This whiskey has a lot to offer, and at 90 proof, is very drinkable.
